Montemurro – We had to draw them out in wide areas

Vivianne Miedema was at her clinical best on Thursday night, scoring twice to help us secure a valuable 3-2 win over Liverpool on the road.

Coming into this fixture, the Netherlands international was on a goal drought by her own lofty standards, having gone four Women’s Super League games without a goal - but that didn’t last long as she made it 1-1 with an instinctive finish on the half-hour mark, before climbing high inside the area to head home a late winner.

We spoke to Miedema after the final whistle - and this is what she said:

on scoring twice…
I think I’m more worried about how I am physically right now. I struggle myself as well and I’m happy that I could even play tonight and happy that I could help the team. I mean we just need to carry on from now on.

on any potential injuries…
I’m not carrying any knocks I just have a sore back. I can’t really do anything about it and hopefully it will sort itself out. Obviously it doesn’t really help with the pitches we’re playing at sometimes, but today was okay so we can’t complain.

on the match…
I think they made it really hard for us in the first half. We didn’t play our football and their football did a good job. They had two chances and they both finished them and obviously for us coming back after half-time we knew that hopefully one goal was enough and it was enough today. I think we are a little lucky getting the three points.

on playing Liverpool…
You could see today that defensively they’re organised. We knew that before, and I think in the first half we didn’t really switch the ball enough and in the second half before the crosses were coming in you can kind of see that we created more chances. It doesn’t really say much, we won the game, I don’t care if it’s 5-4 or 1-0, I’m just happy we got three points today because that’s what we needed.

on Joe’s words at half-time…
He was upset with the way we played but we all were so we kind of knew that once we came out in the second half we had to make a 180 degree turn. I think that we did that, we controlled the game a little better but it was still not up to our standard. Obviously we have Sunday in the FA Cup and the week after that against Reading we need to up our game.
